Particle-Based Simulation of Reactive Flows in Heterogeneous Catalysis

PhD Position: Particle-Based Simulation of Reactive Flows in Heterogeneous Catalysis

Location: Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen, Germany; Institute for Multiscale Simulation
Duration: 36 months
Start: as soon as possible

Project overview: The project focuses on particle-based simulation of reactive flows in heterogeneous catalytic systems. Using DSMC and SRD, we study chemical reactions, transport processes, and their interaction with catalyst geometry and operating conditions. The work includes developing chemical reaction models, implementing heat-transfer models, and performing simulation studies to evaluate and improve catalytic performance. The goal is to advance numerical tools for predicting reactive flow behaviour at catalytic surfaces.

Profile of the ideal applicant:

We look for a PhD student with the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in physics, computational engineering, computer science (with a strong interest in physics), or related subjects
  • Excellent programming skills, preferably in C++ and Python
  • Ideally (but not necessary) experience in one or more of the following areas: high-performance computing, efficient algorithms, particle simulations (DSMC, SRD, MD, SPH), data analysis, and visualization
  • Strong academic writing skills and clear communication skills in English
  • Ideally (but not mandatory) knowledge of the German language

Scientific environment: The Institute for Multiscale Simulation (MSS) combines theoretical, numerical, and experimental expertise in many-particle systems. The successful candidate will work closely with researchers at MSS and across FAU, benefit from access to high-performance computing systems, and contribute to the development of advanced particle-based models for catalytic processes.

Salary and conditions: The position is paid according to the German income scheme for public service, TVL E13, with the percentage dependent on qualification. The position is initially limited to 2 years, with the possibility of extension.

Application:
