Granular Damping
Granular Damping
Granular Dampers are used to reduce unwanted Vibrations. They are easy to construct, require little maintenance and operate almost independently of temperature. Since Granular Dampers can be completely sealed they are especially suitable for medical applications that require sterilized equipment. They are also applicable in microgravity environments, like satellite antennas, where they operate even more efficiently. However due to a lack of a general design guideline, these dampers have been rarely used to date. By successfully understanding the physics behind granular dampers, the research at MSS now provides for these guidelines.
